when writing a fic for Farscape to explain why one of the Moyans says an Erp word?  A lot of fiction that I read the author finds it necessary to put in parenthesis why Aeryn or whoever says an Earth word.  Wouldn't it be self explanatory that she learned it from John and just go on without the explanation?  I find it takes away from the story when I have to read why they say the word, which is because John says it.   John says Hezmana and other words that are not his but no one feels the need to explain it.  So why do they feel the need to explain when the Moyans use an Earth word?  They are learning from him just like he is from them.

Just a thought.

I agree.  It's not necessary.  I feel in kind of insinuates that the writer doesn't believe the reader can figure that out.  I, myself, admit to being dense on some bad days, but please don't treat me like I am normally that way...

I agree with you, Sybil.  I enjoy just flinging the word out there, especially if they choose the wrong word or misuse it, and allowing the reader to cope with it right alongside John.  Most of the time, John is going to respond anyway, especially if a word gets misused, which is all the explanation the reader will need.  It should be the same as how they wrote the show:  assume intelligence on the part of the viewer/reader.  Fling it out there, use John's reaction to provide an explanation if the reference is really that obscure, and get on with the story.

Perhaps the writer is taking into consideration that there could be people who don't have a good command of the Farscape lingo?  I agree that takes away from the story.  Just as it does when you get so bogged down with the details that you are missing what the point of the story is.
