I agree with you, Sybil. I enjoy just flinging the word out there, especially if they choose the wrong word or misuse it, and allowing the reader to cope with it right alongside John. Most of the time, John is going to respond anyway, especially if a word gets misused, which is all the explanation the reader will need. It should be the same as how they wrote the show: assume intelligence on the part of the viewer/reader. Fling it out there, use John's reaction to provide an explanation if the reference is really that obscure, and get on with the story.
