Home Improvement Project 2006
Phase 2:  Windows and Trim
Before:
All images are thumbnails.  Click on a picture for a larger version.
Here is the 'Crash Version' of the
room.  Phase 2 includes replacing the
trim around the windows.
The project supervisor surveys the site
prior to beginning work.  Note that the
window dividers have been removed.
New Windows:
The windows in my house were more than 20 years old, and were beginning to show their age, so I had them replaced with vinyl inserts,
instead of entire new windows.  The advantage of the inserts is that the windows do not have to be reframed.  It can be done very fast, from
the inside of the house, without tearing the exterior to bits.  I had it done in the middle of winter because a local glass company offers half off
the labor in the winter in an attempt to keep their crews working.  These are double-paned, Low-E, argon filled, highly energy efficient
windows.  The storm windows were left on the house in order to protect my lovely new windows from frelling GOLF BALLS!!!!
Once again, the furniture has been
moved.  Everything is cleared out so
the work crew can get to the windows.
On the left, one of the new windows.
On the right, nothing left but the outer
storm window.
Master bedroom:  This is to show that
the window casing and trim came out
and went back in as a single unit.
Livingroom:  The old windows have
been torn out.  What is there are the
outer storm windows.
Gorgeous new windows!  The glass
company installed 11 new windows in
3-1/2 hours!
Windowsills and new trim:
Window sills go in first.  Jason (L) and
Tom (R) tended to disappear abruptly
whenever the camera came out.
Prep work so the window sills will be
level and fit well.  Nice new insulation.
Livingroom:  The first piece of wood is
in place ... spanning three windows.
Not as easy as Tom makes it look.
Bathroom window sill is in.  The frosted
glass is actually just a stick-on film that
I bought at Home Depot.
This was a 2-day project.  I offered to
turn my hallway into a lumber yard
overnight.
More progress in the livingroom.  The
'returns', which are alongside the
windows, are being installed.
Tom managed to dodge out of sight
just before I hit the button.  Darn!
Trying to show a little of the mess.
Kitchen window:  the first two pieces of
casing alongside the window are in
place.
Downstairs bathroom:  DONE!!!  This
window is the same size as the one in
the kitchen, so they look similar
Back in the livingroom, Tom has
finished the returns and is *almost*
ready to put up the trim.
But first ... new insulation all the way
around the windows.  It's Vermont,
after all.
They're DONE!!! ... but need paint.  At
this point, I'm trying to get some
shades up and put the room back in
order.
The supervisor checks out the finished
product.  The important thing to note is
that it took her about 1 hour to
discover this great new place to perch.
End Result - Phase 2:
Before
After:  From the same angle.  Note the
chair rail in the lower left corner.
After: From a different angle for a
better view of the window trim.
Just for fun, this is how the livingroom
looked when I bought the house,
including a glimpse of the diningroom
wallpaper.
